The Embrace I Miss the Most: A Lesson in Regret

Daily writing prompt
Write about a time when you didn’t take action but wish you had. What would you do differently?

There is one thing I will regret for the rest of my life-a chance I lost and can never get back. I didn’t hug my grandma enough before she passed away.

My grandma was one of the most incredible women I’ve ever known: strong, kind, and incredibly forgiving. She raised me from the time I was an infant as if I were her own son, and I loved her like a mother. Toward the end of her life, she struggled with Alzheimer’s disease. While she never forgot her family, her short-term memory faded. She would often ask for medication she had just taken, and when I tried to explain for her own safety, she would become upset, thinking we wanted her to suffer. In those moments of frustration, I sometimes lost my temper and yelled. I still feel the weight of that guilt today.

The day she passed, I had just returned from work. I was in my room when my father knocked and told me the news. I was so paralyzed by shock that when I saw her, I didn’t even reach out to hug her one last time. That was my final chance, and I let it slip away.

If I could tell you one thing, it’s this: Please, hug the people you love while they are still here. Don’t hesitate or wait for a “better” moment. You never know when that chance will become a memory.

What about you guys? What action do you regret the most? Please share your stories in the comments below.
