If you ask me what makes me the most nervous, the answer is simple: being in front of a crowd. Whether it’s giving a presentation or standing on a stage, it’s an experience I usually try to avoid. But as we all know, sometimes there’s no other option-you just have to face it.
The First Time: A Grade 2 Lesson
I still remember the very first time I felt that overwhelming pressure. Back in Grade 2, I was chosen to give a presentation in front of the entire school. I told my teacher I didn’t want to do it, but she gave me some advice that stuck: “Everyone has their first time. If you never try, you’ll never know how.”
She was right, of course. When the moment came, I was so nervous I could barely stand straight; I ended up awkwardly balancing on one leg. I was on the verge of tears, but somehow, I pushed through. Looking back, I think I did pretty well for a first-timer, even with the shaky legs!
The Recent Challenge: Breaking the Silence
The most recent test of my nerves was when I had to present our team’s progress to the entire department. Even though I’ve known my colleagues for years, the old anxiety came rushing back. It felt like I hadn’t done a presentation in a millennium!
I practiced relentlessly before the “showdown.” Interestingly, despite having detailed notes on the screen, I ended up presenting from my own understanding instead. I was so proud of myself for achieving that level of flow. In the end, my manager even complimented me on a job well done.
It’s moments like these that remind me: being nervous is just a sign that you’re doing something that matters.
What about you guys? What makes you nervous? Let me know in the comments!
