Why I don't want kids

Daily writing prompt
What is one question you hate to be asked? Explain.

Every time I go back to my hometown, I’m bombarded with the same question from relatives: “Why don’t you want children yet?” Most people my age are already parents, and the elders keep pushing me to join the club. My answer is always a firm “No,” and here’s why I’m standing my ground.

A Quick Disclaimer: I have absolutely nothing against parents. I genuinely admire those who are ready. I believe every child deserves to be born into a family that can fully support them, not into a life of struggle.

Financial Reality in This Economy

Let’s be real-with my current salary, I’m living month-to-month. In today’s economic climate, raising a child feels less like a dream and more like a financial nightmare. Just look at my bank account after taking care of my dog! Most of my extra income goes toward my passion: video games. Some might call me selfish, and you know what? I agree. If I can’t even give myself the best life possible yet, why would I bring another person into the mix?

Freedom and Personal Peace

I value my time and my freedom. Being a parent means living in constant worry and losing the ability to just go. Honestly, I’m far too lazy to deal with being woken up every two hours by a crying infant. To me, that’s not a lifestyle; it’s a sentence of exhaustion, and I choose to opt out.

Breaking the Cycle of Burden

Taking care of a dog is one thing, but being responsible for a human for the next 25 years in this economy? I refuse to drown in debt just to keep a family afloat. When people try to guilt-trip me by saying, “By that logic, you were a burden to your parents too!”-I don’t argue. I tell them, “Exactly. My brother and I were a burden, and that’s precisely why I don’t want to pass that weight down.” My parents understand and respect my choice, so why should it bother anyone else?

Final Thoughts

While parenthood isn’t for me, I wish the best for those who are ready to provide a great future for their children. As for me and my girlfriend, we’ve made our choice. We’re going to spend our time and money traveling the world and playing the games we love together.

What about you? What’s your take on the “no-kid” lifestyle? Let’s discuss in the comments.
